Week 1 & 2

Think about things differently

I think I have a blog, or I might have 3 by accident, but that’s a huge step for me! I have very little tech knowledge, so this class is going to be a massive learning curve for me. I’m excited for the challenge to get into the 21st century so that when I teach little people, I can support their learning fully, and maybe even keep up with the little humans at my house! There has been some sweat and tears, but I am confident that this is going to be a great semester with lots of moving forward closer to the cherished B.Ed.

Most Likely to Succeed Documentary

The movie, Most Likely to Succeed, was interesting as it is really a great conversation about flipping the education system on its head. The documentary really spoke to me about the value of students learning for themselves, developing skills that they actually need for the future, as opposed to memorizing facts which can be looked up instantly. The ‘soft’ skills which the students were really embedding in their psyche such as perseverance, leadership, project and time management, confidence, public speaking, and team working, are truly essential for students, but how many of our students are learning or developing these skills these days? I often see young students around me who are bored, who are not challenged, who are able to get their work done quickly, then use their ‘spare’ time in class to think or read while others are still working through problems, who tell me they don’t learn much in school…these are worrying glimpses of middle school for students who are going to be graduating in 5 years. I have hope that our generation of teacher candidates will be part of a new generation of teachers who support, encourage and help students develop these ‘soft’ but crucial life skills.
